Fall protection has been OSHA's **most-cited standard for more than a decade**. [29 CFR 1926.501](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1926/1926.501) has topped the agency's [Top 10 Most Frequently Cited Standards](https://www.osha.gov/top10citedstandards) every year since 2011, and fall protection *training* — [1926.503](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1926/1926.503) — appears separately in the same list. Two entries in the top ten, for the same hazard.

Falls are also the leading cause of death in construction, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' [Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries](https://www.bls.gov/iif/fatal-injuries-tables.htm), roughly one in three construction fatalities each year.

Any time an employee is exposed to a fall hazard, the employer must explain the risks, train them on the specific systems in use, and document it. That last part isn't optional.

An employee can get hurt or even killed, and your business might suffer, too. When OSHA identifies safety violations, they have the authority to charge fines, shut down your job site, and require you to get a fall protection certification for every employee exposed to a fall risk before you may reopen.

We can help you meet any OSHA fall protection certification rules, [OSHA scissor lift certification requirements](https://www.certifymeonline.net/osha-scissor-lift-certification-requirements/), [JCB training](https://www.certifymeonline.net/jcb-training/) obligations, and more with our online training kits. ## Understanding Fall Protection Certification

Because falls are a major workplace hazard, employees should be trained before handling these risks. Fall protection certification educates employees about fall hazards, how to stay safe at heights, and procedures for different jobs.

Obtaining the proper fall protection certification for all your team members greatly benefits you, your team, and your business. First, it creates a safer work environment. When everyone better understands the hazards and risks of falls, employees will be more vigilant. This helps prevent work-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Proper training won’t stop every accident. Still, it helps prevent accidents caused by insufficient knowledge, a lack of safety measures, and haphazard employee behavior.

Another major advantage is that certifying your team helps you comply with OSHA regulations. OSHA regularly inspects job sites. If you’re found violating safety standards by failing to obtain the proper certifications for your team, you could be fined or even have your job site shut down.

## OSHA Fall Protection Training Requirements

Per [OSHA standards](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.30), employees must receive the proper training before being exposed to a fall hazard. This includes any height that requires a fall protection system.

OSHA fall protection training certification comes in the form of a training course. Still, employers must be aware of the different types of fall hazards and training courses. Depending on the situation, different certifications and courses may be needed. For instance, [aerial lift training requirements](https://www.certifymeonline.net/aerial-lift-training-requirements/) say that employees must have specific training to operate and use them. Certifying an employee to use an aerial lift requires more than a simple fall protection course.

OSHA fall protection certification may also require employees to submit to an evaluation when operating equipment like an aerial lift or forklift. We offer a [train-the-trainer](https://www.certifymeonline.net/train-the-trainer-certification/) kit to help you certify an evaluator on your team.

## Fall Protection Certification Process

Using CertifyMeOnline.net’s fall protection training certification program, your employees will get access to our training modules, checklists, forms, and tools. We’ll go over in detail how to use personal protective equipment, identify fall hazards, and work safely around these risks.

We offer fall protection certification online, but depending on the type of certification you need, you may also need employees to submit to an evaluation by a certified trainer. You can hire a certified trainer or train an existing employee using our modules.

## Benefits of Fall Protection Certification

Obtaining a fall protection certification for employees exposed to fall risks is crucial to your business. It provides the following main benefits:

- **✓** Helps prevent work-related accidents
- **✓** Reduces workplace injuries and fatalities
- **✓** Keeps your job sites OSHA compliant
- **✓** Helps you gain more jobs and boosts your credibility
- **✓** Protects your business from legal liability

## How Often is Fall Protection Training Required?

OSHA sets no calendar interval for fall protection retraining; there's no "every two years" or "every three years" rule the way there is for forklifts under 1910.178. Under 29 CFR 1926.503(c) and 29 CFR 1910.30, retraining is required whenever the workplace changes in a way that makes prior training obsolete, whenever fall protection systems or equipment change, or whenever a worker's knowledge or use of the equipment shows they haven't retained it. Many employers run an annual refresher as best practice, which is sensible; just don't mistake it for a legal deadline. Here at CertifyMeOnline.Net, we offer refresher courses for:

- [**✓** Aerial lift certification renewal](https://www.certifymeonline.net/3-year-renewal/)
- [**✓** Scissor lift certification](https://www.certifymeonline.net/scissor-lift-certification/)
- [**✓** Boom lift certification](https://www.certifymeonline.net/get-scissor-boom-lift-certification/)
- [**✓** Cherry picker certification](https://www.certifymeonline.net/cherry-picker-certification/)

Check out our site to see more of the courses we offer.

## Fall Protection is the one Course where the Paperwork is the Law

For most OSHA training, written records are strongly recommended but not strictly required. Fall protection is the exception. **[29 CFR 1926.503(b)](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1926/1926.503) requires the employer to prepare a written certification record** for every trained worker; and it spells out exactly what has to be in it.

What the record must contain — 29 CFR 1926.503(b)

| The worker’s name1926.503(b)(1) | The name or other identity of the employee who was trained. One record per person, not a roster of everyone who sat in the room. |
|---|---|
| The training date1926.503(b)(1) | The date, or dates, the training took place. If the worker is retrained later, the record updates. |
| A signature1926.503(b)(1) | The signature of the person who conducted the training, or of the employer. Someone has to put their name to it. |

**Compare that to scissor lifts.** OSHA classifies scissor lifts as mobile scaffolds, and the scaffold training standard at [29 CFR 1926.454](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1926/1926.454) doesn’t technically require written documentation at all — inspectors assess compliance by observing work and interviewing crews. Keeping records there is best practice. For fall protection, it’s the regulation.

That’s the practical reason to buy a course rather than run an informal toolbox talk: when an inspector asks, or when something goes wrong and an insurer starts reading files, you want a dated record with a name and a signature on it. Our $49 Fall Protection Video Certification produces exactly that, and it stays in your account to reprint for as long as you need it.

If so, check out the free resources on our [aerial lift blog](https://www.certifymeonline.net/blog/) for more details and learn answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about fall hazards below.

### Does OSHA Require Fall Protection Training?

Yes. Per OSHA’s rules, employers must provide adequate training to any employee before they are exposed to a fall hazard. Training is also needed when the employee is expected to use personal fall protection systems. They must be trained on the equipment they’re using for the circumstances of the job.

### What are the Levels of Fall Protection Training?

Four training levels are commonly used across the industry, and they come from [ANSI/ASSP Z359.2](https://blog.ansi.org/ansi/ansi-assp-z359-2-2023-fall-protection-program/) rather than from OSHA:

- **✓** Awareness
- **✓** Authorized-User
- **✓** Competent Person
- **✓** Qualified Person Training

OSHA itself defines only two of these, competent person and qualified person, both at [29 CFR 1926.32,](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1926/1926.32) and requires under 1926.503(a) that fall protection training be delivered by a competent person qualified in the relevant areas.

### How Often Does OSHA Require Fall Protection Training?

OSHA doesn't set one. Retraining is required when workplace conditions change, fall protection equipment changes, or a worker shows they haven't retained the training. Those triggers can arrive at any time; a certificate dated last month doesn't help if you've just switched harness models.

### What Fall Protection is Required by OSHA?

It depends on the work and the height. In construction, fall protection is required at **6 feet** above a lower level under 29 CFR 1926.501. In general industry, it's **4 feet** under 29 CFR 1910.28, and in shipyards it's 5 feet. At or above those heights, workers must be protected by a guardrail system, a safety net system, or a personal fall arrest system. Some operations, working over dangerous equipment, or on scaffolds and aerial lifts; carry their own requirements regardless of height.
